Modena has become the centre of Artificial Intelligence. The area is home to the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE) and its AI Academy and the International Research Center for Vision and Artificial Intelligence, a globally recognized research center.

Doxee is among the list of public and private Italian companies such as the Regione Emilia-Romagna and the Fondazione CariModena who have joined forces to support this project.

Modena: the European Hub for AI

The two institutes will be led by the Italian AI guru, Professor Rita Cucchiara of the Engineering Department “Enzo Ferrari” of UniMore and director of CINI-AIIS Lab, the national inter-university laboratory of AI and intelligent systems for IT.

Professor Cucchiara officially introduced the labs on May 14, together with the director Massimo Borghi, Palma Costi of the Emilia-Romagna Region, the president of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio of Modena, and Stefano Bossi, president of Filiera Digital di Confindustria Emilia Area Centro.

The AI Academy will be located within UNIMORE and will become the largest AI research center specializing in machine learning and computer vision. The project also includes the design and construction of a new wing, which will house laboratories dedicated to the most current and innovative applications of AI, such as medical imaging, human-robot and human-vehicle interaction, and video surveillance, and to the development of new and more powerful deep learning networks.

The program will operate within the European network of Ellis (European Labs Learning and Intelligent Systems), also supported by the Max Plank Institute of Tübingen (Germany) and the Innovation Center of AI in Amsterdam (Netherlands), and will be in English, consistent with the activation of the curriculum for “Artificial Intelligence Engineering,” the new master’s degree in Computer Engineering that will debut in Modena for the 2019-2020 academic year.
